WHICH FILLING TO CHOOSE?

Amalgam (grey) fillings have lately often been referred to as harmful. But are they really harmful? Or maybe it is about different industries fighting for supremacy – the manufacturers of so-called new and better materials.

We know that:

Dental amalgam contains 50% mercury; The mercury (Hg) is slowly released from the amalgam and is highly toxic.

Cases of mild mercury poisoning are characterized by the following symptoms: anxiety, irritability, fatigue, low stress tolerance, mood swings, lack of self-confidence, indecisiveness, headaches, depression, metal taste in the mouth...

However, it is not known whether the quantity released form the amalgam is sufficient to cause some of these symptoms or deseases, even in cases of numerous amalgam fillings. It mostly depends on how sensitive each organism is to the presence of mercury and how it reacts to it.

On the other hand, amalgam has been used in dentistry since 1895, with more or less changes in its composition, and no other modern material has reached its physical characteristics. It is definitely not advised to apply amalgam fillings to pregnant women, nor to remove the amalgam from the mouth by filing it down, as this would drastically enhance the amount of mercury in the organism, which can be harmful for the fetus.

In the best interest of protecting their citizens' health, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Canada have recently introduced a limited use of amalgam in dentistry.
